Nike Alphafly 3 Review (2026) – Marathon Performance Tested

First Impressions: Out of the Box

The first thing that stands out with the Nike Alphafly 3 is how refined it looks compared to previous versions. Gone is the bulkier, more experimental feel — this is a sleeker, more streamlined race shoe.

The AtomKnit upper feels minimal but structured, wrapping the foot securely without excess material. The updated shape looks more aggressive, and noticeably more “race ready” than earlier Alphafly iterations.

In hand, it’s incredibly light for the amount of technology underfoot — ZoomX foam, dual Air Zoom pods, and a full-length carbon plate all working together.

This is very clearly a shoe built with one purpose: going fast over long distances.

Midsole & Ride: Built for Speed

The Alphafly 3 uses Nike’s proven race-day system:

  • ZoomX foam
  • Full-length carbon plate
  • Dual Air Zoom pods

The ride is unapologetically aggressive.

Where trainers like the Superblast focus on comfort and versatility, the Alphafly actively drives you forward, making it one of the most efficient marathon race shoes currently available.

How It Feels at Marathon Pace

This is where the Alphafly 3 earns its reputation.

At marathon pace, the shoe feels incredibly efficient. The geometry works with you to maintain rhythm, reducing the effort required to hold speed over long distances.

On test, it felt:

  • extremely responsive when pushing the pace
  • surprisingly protective despite being a race shoe
  • locked-in and efficient once up to speed

The key difference vs a trainer is how much the shoe assists your stride — it almost feels like it’s doing part of the work for you.

Where This Shoe Excels

The Alphafly 3 is built specifically for:

  • marathon racing
  • half marathon racing
  • long race-pace efforts

If you're training for a marathon, pairing a shoe like this with a structured fuelling strategy becomes critical.

Fuelling Compatibility (Critical for Race Day)

One of the biggest considerations with a shoe like the Alphafly is how it behaves when you’re fuelling at speed.

Because the ride is more aggressive and less stable than a trainer, fuelling needs to be simple and repeatable.

During testing:

  • grabbing fuel requires more focus
  • maintaining rhythm is critical
  • anything fiddly becomes a problem

For this reason, I prefer using chewable carbohydrates rather than gels during efforts in this shoe.

👉 Energy Chews work well because:

  • you can eat them gradually
  • no need to open multiple wrappers
  • easier to manage at race pace

For longer efforts, I pair this with a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink:

👉 Power Fluids

This combination allows for consistent energy intake without breaking stride, which is critical when racing.

Superblast vs Alphafly (Quick Comparison)

If you're deciding between training and race shoes:

  • Superblast = long runs, tempo, comfort
  • Alphafly = race day, efficiency, speed

Together, they form a very strong marathon training + race combination.

Pros

  • Exceptional energy return and propulsion
  • Designed specifically for marathon performance
  • Lighter and more refined than previous versions
  • Highly efficient at race pace
  • Strong cushioning for a race shoe

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Less stable at slower paces
  • Not suitable for easy runs or daily training
  • Requires good running mechanics

Verdict

The Nike Alphafly 3 is a pure race-day shoe.

It’s not designed to do everything — but what it does, it does exceptionally well. At marathon pace, it delivers a level of efficiency and propulsion that’s hard to match.

If you’re targeting a PB and want every possible advantage, this is one of the most effective marathon shoes available right now.

Rating: 9.7/10

Race Day Setup

For race efforts I typically use a complete fuelling system to remove decision-making mid-run and maintain consistent intake.

At FTP Endurance Fuel, all products are tested during real training and race conditions — not just in theory.
