Sustainable Sports Nutrition: Why Packaging Matters to Endurance Athletes

Empty your kit bag after a big training block and you will find the evidence. A drawer, a jersey pocket, the bottom of a saddlebag, all stuffed with sticky foil wrappers you meant to throw away three rides ago. Most of us have made peace with it. Fuelling properly means eating something roughly every 20 to 30 minutes for hours on end, and almost everything sold for that job arrives individually sealed in a laminate sachet that will outlive us by several centuries.

This is not a guilt trip. Under-fuelling is a far bigger problem in amateur endurance sport than over-packaging, and nobody should skip carbohydrate to save a wrapper. But sustainable sports nutrition is worth thinking about properly, because the choices that reduce packaging tend to be the same choices that reduce cost per gram of carbohydrate and make your fuelling easier to plan. Here is what the packaging actually is, why it is so hard to recycle, and what to look for if you want to carry less rubbish around.

The Numbers Behind Single-Serve Fuelling

Start with the arithmetic of a long day. Current guidance for events lasting two and a half hours or more sits at 60 to 90g of carbohydrate per hour, and well-trained athletes using a glucose-to-fructose blend can push towards 100g/hr with gut training. Take a six-hour sportive at a conservative 70g/hr. That is 420g of carbohydrate. At roughly 22 to 25g of carbohydrate per single-serve sachet, you are looking at 17 to 19 wrappers for one ride.

Do that once a fortnight through a summer season, add your long runs and your race days, and a single athlete can comfortably get through 250 to 400 individual sachets a year. Each one weighs only a couple of grams, so the mass is trivial. The problem is what those two grams are made of.

A typical gel or chew sachet is a multi-layer laminate: a printed outer polyester layer, an aluminium or metallised barrier layer in the middle, and a polyethylene inner layer that takes the heat seal. That sandwich exists for a good reason. It keeps oxygen and moisture out, which is what allows a product with real fruit content to sit in a warehouse for 18 months without going off. It is also precisely why the wrapper cannot be recycled through UK kerbside collections. Mechanical recycling needs a single polymer stream, and there is no economical way to separate a 60-micron laminate back into its constituent layers. Almost all of it goes to energy-from-waste incineration or landfill.

Litter, Rules and the Sharp End of the Sport

The professional peloton has already had this argument. The UCI introduced formal litter zones in 2021 with fines and, for repeat offences, time penalties and disqualification for riders discarding bidons and wrappers outside designated areas. British race organisers and sportive promoters have followed with their own litter-drop rules, and trail running events increasingly run mandatory kit checks that include carrying your own rubbish out.

There is a practical reason beyond optics. A foil wrapper dropped on a Highland trail does not break down in any meaningful timeframe, and the sticky residue makes it attractive to wildlife. Anyone who has marshalled a race and spent the following morning walking the course with a bin bag knows exactly how many wrappers 800 runners generate. If you want a single behavioural change that matters more than anything else on this list, it is this: put the empty back in your pocket. A cheap zip-lock bag in the rear right pocket solves the "sticky wrapper" excuse permanently.

What "Sustainable" Actually Means on a Label

The word gets used loosely, so it is worth being specific about which claims carry weight.

  • Compostable films. Most certified compostable packaging is certified to EN 13432, which means industrial composting at sustained temperatures around 55 to 60°C. That is not your garden compost heap, and UK councils largely do not accept packaging in food waste collections. A compostable wrapper dropped on a trail behaves much like a conventional one for a very long time.
  • Mono-material packaging. A pouch made entirely of polyethylene, without the aluminium barrier layer, can genuinely be recycled through supermarket soft plastic collection points. This is the most credible current improvement, though it usually means a shorter shelf life.
  • Recycled content. The UK Plastic Packaging Tax, introduced in April 2022, charges producers over £200 per tonne on packaging containing less than 30% recycled plastic, and Extended Producer Responsibility fees now push more of the disposal cost back onto the brand. Both mean packaging weight is a real line on a manufacturer's P&L, not just a marketing angle.
  • Packaging per gram of carbohydrate. The metric nobody prints on a label, and the one that actually matters. It is the only fair way to compare a bulk pouch against a box of singles.

Buying in Bulk Is the Boring, Effective Answer

Here is the honest conclusion: the single biggest reduction available to an amateur endurance athlete is not switching to a cleverer film. It is buying a large resealable pouch and decanting.

Run the comparison. A 1kg pouch weighs roughly 12 to 18g as packaging. Deliver the same 1kg of product in 40 individual 25g sachets and you are at 80 to 100g of laminate, five to eight times the material for the identical fuel. Decant what you need into a small reusable zip bag or a bento box before you head out, and you carry no disposable packaging at all on the ride. The wrapper problem simply stops existing.

Bulk buying also solves the thing that quietly wrecks most fuelling plans: cost. When each sachet feels expensive, athletes ration them, and rationing carbohydrate is how you end up walking the last climb. A bulk format removes the psychological barrier to taking the ninth chew of the day.

But sustainable sports nutrition is mostly about format decisions, not slogans: fewer units of packaging per gram of carbohydrate, nothing dropped on the trail, and enough fuel in your pocket that you never have to ration it.
