Every long session has a point where it stops being fun. Extra Life is built for that point.
One sachet. 50g of carbohydrate, 100mg of caffeine and 150mg of sodium, in a tart cherry flavour gel you can get down when you can no longer face chewing.
It is not your hourly fuel. It is the sachet in your back pocket for the hard section.
FTP was built on pastilles because gels, as most brands make them, are a poor deal: 20–30g of carbohydrate for the price of a pint, a sticky sachet to open with cold hands, and a wrapper to carry home.
None of that has changed. What changed is that we found the one job pastilles cannot do.
Take Extra Life when: you are three hours in and coming apart; you need carbohydrate fast and chewing has stopped being an option; or you want your caffeine as one deliberate hit before the hard section rather than sipped across the whole day.
Do not use it for: routine hourly fuel. That is what Energy Pastilles and Power Fluids are for, at a fraction of the cost per gram.
Energy Pastilles: core fuel. The carbohydrate you take every hour, all session long. Chewable, no single-use wrappers, best value per gram.
Power Fluids: hydration and electrolytes. Carbs, sodium and fluid in the bottle.
Extra Life: the hard bit. The biggest single dose of carbohydrate we make, with caffeine attached.
50g of carbohydrate, from maltodextrin and fructose. Most gels carry 20–30g, and only 19g of this is sugars.
100mg of caffeine, from natural coffee extract. Around the same as a strong espresso.
150mg of sodium and 178mg of chloride.
Tart cherry flavour. Sharp rather than sweet, which helps when everything else tastes like syrup.
Pectin-set, 50ml. Take it with water.
Ingredients: Maltodextrin, Fructose, Water, Gelling Agent (Pectin), Salt (Sodium Chloride), Acidity Regulators (Citric Acid, Trisodium Citrate), Cherry Flavouring, Natural Coffee Extract (source of Caffeine), Botanical Extract (Sorbus aucuparia L.), Carrot Concentrate. No declarable allergens.
Contains caffeine (143mg/100g, 100mg per sachet). Not recommended for children or pregnant women. Vegan friendly. Store cool and dry, out of direct sunlight. Made in the UK.

One gel with water about 15 minutes before you need it, then one every 30–45 minutes of hard effort if you need more. Maximum 3 caffeinated gels per day.
Count your caffeine. 100mg is roughly a strong espresso. If you are also drinking Power Fluids Core at 50mg a bottle, and had coffee before you left, that adds up quickly.
Practise it in training. A 50g hit of carbohydrate is a lot to put into a stomach that has never seen one. Race morning is the worst possible time to find that out.

Carbohydrate per serving
Grams of carbohydrate in one serving of each.
Banana: USDA FoodData Central, one medium banana (118g), 27g carbohydrate. FTP figures from our own nutrition panels.
Most endurance athletes eat 30 to 45g of carbohydrate an hour on moderate efforts and 60 to 90g an hour on long or hard sessions. Start in the first half hour and spread it through the session. Extra Life sits on top of that plan, not instead of it.
| Session | Carbs per hour | How to fuel it with FTP |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 hour | Usually none | Water. Fuel the session before with a normal meal. |
| 1 to 2 hours | 30 to 45g | 1 to 1.5 servings of Energy Pastilles an hour. |
| 2 to 3 hours | 60 to 90g | 2 to 3 servings of pastilles an hour, with Power Fluids in your bottle. |
| 3 hours plus, or race day | 60 to 90g | Your hourly pastilles and fluids, plus one Extra Life about 15 minutes before the hard section. |

The FTP fuelling system
Three jobs, three products. Extra Life is the smallest part of the plan, on purpose.

The carbohydrate you take every hour, all session long. 30g per 2-pastille serving, no single-use wrappers, best value per gram.

Carbohydrate, sodium and fluid in your bottle, so the pastilles are not doing all the work.

About 15 minutes before the hard section, with water. Keep fuelling as normal with pastilles and fluids every hour. Extra Life sits on top of that plan, it does not replace it.
No more than 3 caffeinated gels a day. Each sachet has 100mg of caffeine, so count any coffee and caffeinated drink mix too. Not recommended for children or pregnant women.
Pastilles are your hourly fuel: 30g of carbohydrate per 2-pastille serving, no caffeine, no single-use wrapper. Extra Life is 50g of carbohydrate and 100mg of caffeine in one sachet, for the moment chewing stops being an option.
