Nike Vomero Premium Review (2026) – Max Cushion Tested on Real Runs

I've been testing the Nike Vomero Premium on real training runs — a steady 10K and a quicker 6.5K — to see whether 55mm of ZoomX and twin Air Zoom units actually deliver. Here's how Nike's tallest trainer performs.

Nike Vomero Premium running shoes with ZoomX midsole and visible Air Zoom units

Our verdict: The Nike Vomero Premium is the most cushioned shoe Nike has ever made — 55mm of ZoomX foam with visible Air Zoom units under the heel and forefoot. It's built for easy days, recovery runs and high-mileage comfort, yet it held together surprisingly well when I pushed the pace. If you want maximum protection underfoot in a training block, this is it.

Specification Nike Vomero Premium
Midsole foam Full-length ZoomX with two visible Air Zoom units (heel and forefoot) — the same Air units used in Nike's Maxfly 2 and Victory 2 track spikes
Plate None — unplated
Stack height 55mm heel / 45mm forefoot (10mm drop) — the tallest stack in Nike's running range
Best for Easy runs, steady mileage, recovery days and long runs in marathon training blocks

First Impressions: Out of the Box

You notice the midsole before anything else. The orange Air Zoom units glowing through yellow halos in an otherwise clean white shoe make the Vomero Premium look like nothing else on the road — half running shoe, half concept car. The stack height is genuinely absurd in hand, and the ZOOMX branding down the sidewall leaves no doubt about what you're standing on.

The upper is a soft engineered mesh with a thick, plush padded tongue and heel collar. Step-in comfort is immediate — this is a shoe you could stand in all day. Despite the enormous platform, it feels lighter on foot than it looks.

The Midsole: ZoomX Plus Air, Everywhere

The headline is the sheer volume of foam. The Vomero Premium runs a full-length ZoomX midsole — Nike's softest cushioning compound — wrapped around two articulated Air Zoom units, one under the heel and one under the forefoot. They're the same Air bags Nike puts in its Maxfly 2 and Victory 2 track spikes, and you can see them compressing through the sidewall as you load the shoe.

Underfoot, the result is deep, pillowy cushioning with a springier feel than a pure max-stack foam shoe. The heel unit takes the sting out of landings; the forefoot unit gives a soft trampoline sensation at toe-off. A gentle rocker keeps transitions rolling smoothly, so despite the height it never feels like you're wading through the foam.

Tested on real runs: a steady 10K and a faster 6.5K

I've put the Vomero Premium through two very different lunch runs to see both sides of it.

First, a steady 10K around Westhill and Elrick at 4:40/km. This is the shoe's natural habitat — relaxed aerobic running where the cushioning does the work. Over 46 minutes it felt:

  • incredibly protective underfoot — almost no ground feel, in a good way

  • smooth and rhythmic thanks to the rocker

  • more stable than a 55mm stack has any right to be, helped by the wide platform

Then a quicker 6.45K at 4:19/km to find its limits. It's not a tempo shoe — nobody should buy it as one — but it coped far better than expected. The Air units give back enough energy that picking up the pace doesn't feel like fighting the shoe, and lockdown through the midfoot stayed secure even cornering at speed.

Where this shoe will really shine

The Vomero Premium makes the most sense as the easy-day workhorse in a marathon training block.

The huge ZoomX platform provides:

  • maximum fatigue reduction on recovery runs after hard sessions

  • soft, consistent landings deep into long runs

  • joint-friendly protection for big weekly mileage

If your rotation already has a plated race shoe and a tempo trainer, this fills the third slot: the shoe that keeps your legs fresh for the sessions that matter.

Fuelling compatibility

A shoe this smooth and stable is ideal for fuelling on the move. Because the ride never forces your stride, it's easy to:

  • reach into a pocket

  • grab a chew

  • keep running without breaking rhythm

For longer efforts I carry chewable carbohydrates rather than gels — easier to eat gradually while moving. A soft chew like FTP Energy Pastilles works particularly well because you don't need water immediately.

On steady 10K-plus runs like the Westhill loop, I pair chews with a carbohydrate electrolyte drink mix to keep energy intake steady.

Pros

  • The most protective cushioning Nike has ever put in a trainer

  • Air Zoom units add genuine spring to a max-stack platform

  • Surprisingly stable for a 55mm shoe

  • Plush, premium upper with excellent step-in comfort

  • Handled 4:19/km pace better than a recovery shoe should

Cons

  • Premium price tag to match the premium name

  • Overkill for shorter, faster sessions — this is not an interval shoe

  • The stack height is over World Athletics' 40mm race limit, so it's a training-only shoe

Common Questions

Is the Nike Vomero Premium good for marathon training?

Yes — as the easy-day and recovery shoe in your rotation. The 55mm ZoomX stack and dual Air Zoom units reduce fatigue across high-mileage weeks and keep landings soft late into long runs. It's not a race-day option though: the stack height exceeds the 40mm World Athletics limit.

What's the difference between the Vomero Premium and the Vomero Plus?

Both use full-length ZoomX foam, but the Premium adds two visible Air Zoom units (heel and forefoot) and roughly 10mm more stack. The Plus is the lighter everyday trainer; the Premium is the max-comfort option for easy miles and recovery days.

Verdict

The Nike Vomero Premium is unapologetically excessive — and that's the point.

It's a maximum-cushion trainer that protects your legs like nothing else, with enough spring from the Air Zoom units that steady running still feels lively rather than laboured.

Across a steady 10K and a faster 6.5K it never lost composure, and as the easy-day shoe in a marathon block it's hard to beat for comfort per mile. If your legs take a beating from high mileage, this is the recovery tool Nike built for you.

Rating: 9/10

For race training I usually use a complete marathon fuelling bundle so I have both carbs and hydration covered.
